Python Source Code Builder

With EditRocket, there is no need to memorize the Python library. All of this information is contained in the Python Code Builder. The code builder includes information on the methods contained in the Python library, for example, Built-in Functions, File methods, String methods, etc.

The Code Builder works by allowing users to select a method category, such as String, and then it displays method signature and method description information for all methods in the selected category. Python Auto Completion

Code Python more quickly with Python Auto Completion. EditRocket supports auto completion in Python when typing module_name., assuming the module was imported using an import statement, such as import sys. EditRocket also can do variable matching for any standard library module so that typing variable name followed by a dot will do auto-completion for the appropriate methods of the parent of the variable. It will also display all methods, functions, and members for a module when typing module followed by a (.). The list displayed after typing a module. shows whether the displayed values are functions, methods, or members. Python Sidekick

Code Python more efficiently with the Python Sidekick. The sidekick has tabs for Python coding inserts, tools, and the Python Method Navigator. The coding inserts tabs gives users the ability to quickly enter many common Python constructs into the text editor with the click of a button, or via customizable keyboard shortcuts. Python Method Navigator

Jump from method to method easily with the Python Method Navigator. The navigator parses the editor contents for Python methods and displays them in a clickable list. Clicking an option from the list takes the user directly to the point in the editor where the method is defined.

Execute Python Programs

Users can execute Python programs and view the standard and error output using the Tools -> Execute Program -> Execute Python Program menu option.

Show in Web Browser / Web Server Integration

Users can view Python scripts in the web browser by selecting the File -> Show in Web Browser option. The first time launch of this tool will prompt users to enter the local web server information. EditRocket will then build the appropriate URL, and create temporary files if necessary to diplay the Python script in the web browser.

I'm currently using IDLE, its decent, but I'd like to know if there're better lightweight IDEs built especially for Mac — free or commercial.

TextMate is a great general-purpose editor for mac. Used by the Rails community a lot, but it's great with python too.

Allow me to suggest the GUI version of Vim for Mac OS X, aptly named MacVim. It is superb.

Best Editor For Python Programming

Purpose built for Mac? Xcode supports python. Textmate and BBEdit are also great editors.

If you're fine with generic multiplatform IDE's, Komodo Edit is great.

Using Python On Mac

So, I was using TextMate for a while for python. It is good for writing small programs but not for managing big projects. I ran into problems, especially sometimes it caused mismatched indentations. For the life of me, I was not able to figure out what was going on. Then I switched to BBEdit, and it helped me a lot. It figures out indentation by itself, gives code completion like xcode, is fairly fast. Unfortunately, it is not a free download. The free version textwrangler should have similar features, however, I have not used it.

Another good option is Spyder. It is made for scientific computing. It basically gives you a MATLAB like IDE for python. And it is free and open source. Install through MacPorts.

There is a commercial one - Textmate.Most of the good free editors are cross-platform (if you are ok with it, I'd recommend EditRa - but it doesn't work properly under 10.6 yet, because of some bugs in wxPython).

There're aren't any Mac-specific Python IDEs, though Komodo's IDE, NetBeans and Eclipse (with the excellent PyDev extensions) all have very good Python IDE functionality and run fine on OS X. I've never used Wing IDE on OS X, but it has a pretty loyal following as well. If you just need an editor (I find that a good editor and a command line are often sufficient for Python), TextMate along with IPython in a terminal is the way to go. When I really do need a full IDE, I've been very happy with Eclipse/PyDev.

I would recommend you to look at Aptana(it's more attractive then Eclipse for me)+PyDev or PyCarm. I use TextMate too, but those are easy for debug.
